With most of the land tilled into tidy rows of corn and beans, deer are a reminder of the natural world here on the prairie, taking on a mythical role as graceful apparitions that disappear as suddenly as they appeared. They are admired, they are hunted for food and sport. They can be cursed for striping a newly planted tree of its tender bark and shoots or popping out from the road ditch while driving. They are everywhere, beauty on four legs.
